The straw-wrapped green bottle every serious bar keeps — Luxardo has been distilling Marasca cherries since 1821, first in Zara and since 1947 in Torreglia. It is the backbone of a Last Word and an Aviation.
Mood: Cherry, dry, essential.
Our sommelier says
Maraschino is not sweet cherry syrup — it is dry, nutty and funky, and a quarter ounce changes a whole drink. Do not free-pour it.
Tasting notes
Marasca cherry, almond and a floral note. Dry and complex across the palate with a nutty cherry-stone character. A long, dry, almond finish.
Food pairing
Last Word, Aviation, Hemingway daiquiri. Also good over vanilla ice cream.
