Is It Kosher? How to Check a Bottle of Whiskey, Tequila or Liqueur
Wine By The Case is a wine and liquor shop, not a kashrus agency. The hechsher is on the bottle, put there by the producer's certifier. This page shows how to check a spirit for yourself and how our shelf is marked.
Wine
Every wine we sell is kosher wine, and a bottle's page says so when it is mevushal. What mevushal means.
Spirits: three things to check
- The label. A kosher symbol printed on the bottle is the clearest answer.
- A kashrus agency's list. STAR-K publishes a public liquor list that marks each product Approved or Not Approved. Other agencies publish their own lists and do not always agree with each other, so follow your own rav.
- The cask. Many lists turn on how a whiskey was finished. STAR-K's notes on approved whiskeys say they are not acceptable when the label carries the words Sherry, Port, Cognac, Madeira, Oloroso, Sauterne, Shiraz, Dual-Cask Finish or Double-Matured.
How our shelf is marked
When we know a spirit on our shelf is not certified, its name on our site says (Not Kosher). That marker is ours and it is not a ruling. A bottle without it still needs checking against the label and a list.
What the STAR-K list says about some of the bottles people ask us about
Read on 11 October 2026. Lists change, so check the list itself before you rely on it.
- Jameson. The list marks Jameson and Jameson Black Barrel Approved, with the cask note above. It marks the 12 Year Old Special Reserve, 18 Year Old Limited Reserve, Gold Reserve, Cold Brew and Rarest Vintage Reserve Not Approved. Our Irish whiskey shelf.
- Chivas Regal. The list marks Chivas Regal 12, 18 and 25 Approved, and Chivas Regal Extra Not Approved. On our site the Extra carries the (Not Kosher) marker.
- Tequila. The list marks tequila from several houses Approved, among them Lunazul Blanco, Reposado and Añejo, Herradura, Milagro, and Don Julio Blanco, Reposado and Añejo. Our tequila shelf.
- Scotch. It goes bottle by bottle. For example the list marks Glenlivet 12 Year Old and Founder's Reserve Approved, and Johnnie Walker Red, Black, Gold and Green Label Approved, while other bottlings from the same distilleries are marked Not Approved. Look up the exact bottle.
- Vodka. The list marks plain Tito's, Ketel One, Svedka and Grey Goose Approved, and Grey Goose flavored vodkas Not Approved. Our vodka shelf.
