From the foot of Mount Daisen in Tottori prefecture, Matsui Shuzo's Kurayoshi Pure Malt is a blended malt drawing on the soft spring water of San'in—gentle, honeyed, and built in the Japanese house style.
Mood: Quiet evening, a small pour, no distractions.
Our sommelier says
Matsui Shuzo, founded in 1910, sits in the small city of Kurayoshi between the Sea of Japan and the Chugoku Mountains. The Pure Malt is a blend of imported and domestic malt whiskies, married and bottled at the distillery using local water filtered through Mount Daisen volcanic stone.
Tasting notes
Honey, vanilla, dried apricot, soft oak, a flicker of green tea. Malt sugar, pear, almond, light caramel, gentle spice. Smooth, soft, lingering honey and a clean oak fade.
Food pairing
Sushi, grilled chicken yakitori, aged hard cheese, or a contemplative nightcap.
