To mark nine generations of winemaking, the family released the Herzog Generation IX Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon as a commemorative bottling. It is a small-allocation Cab from the Stags Leap District, the 1,200-acre Napa AVA famous for blending elegance with Cabernet power. This is a red for a serious occasion. Open it for the milestone, not the random Tuesday.
Mood: Ceremonial, polished, ageworthy.
Tasting Notes
It opens with sun-ripened blueberry and boysenberry, then leans into blackcurrant blossom and black cherry liqueur. Star anise and warm cinnamon weave through the mid-palate. The finish is long, and 26 months in a single French oak barrel have left the tannins polished and fine-grained.
Food Pairing
Serve with rack of lamb, dry-aged ribeye, slow-braised short ribs, or aged hard cheeses. Give it 60-90 minutes in a decanter before serving.
