Mony's reserve Shiraz - the family Trappist-monastery winery in the Judean foothills, a dark, leathery Shiraz that drinks like the Old World.
Mood: The guest who drinks northern Rhône Syrah and wants to see what an Israeli version does. The serious Shabbos table that wants something other than another Cabernet.
Our sommelier says
Dark garnet, weight in the glass. The nose is layered and savory - wild berry and dark currant over a leathery, smoky core, with the spicy lift Shiraz gives when it's grown warm and aged in oak. Full-bodied with restrained, elegant oak that lets the fruit lead. The Judean foothill terroir keeps the alcohol composed at 13.5% - this is Shiraz with structure, not jam. Long, peppery, savory finish. Decant thirty minutes.
